A quick and easy recipe for making simple spelt bread at home.

  • 3 cups spelt flour
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp honey or sugar (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine warm water and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add spelt flour, salt, and honey (if using) to the yeast mixture.
  3. Knead the dough for about 10 minutes until smooth.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf.
  6. Place the loaf in a greased loaf pan and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
  7. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.
  8. Let it cool before slicing.

Notes

  • For a denser bread, use whole spelt flour.
  • Store bread in an airtight container to keep it fresh.
